PASADENA, CA – JANUARY 01: Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer speaks to the media after the Rose Bowl Game presented by Northwestern Mutual at the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2019 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)It’s no secret that college football head coaches are constantly in competition with each other on the recruiting front. Friday night, via the 2,000 texts/emails that Ohio State released relating to the Zach Smith allegations, we got a look at how Ohio State operated under Urban Meyer.Meyer, in one text, noted that Alabama and other programs had been trying to hire away a number of his assistants – including Ryan Day, Alex Grinch, Greg Schiano and Zach Smith. In another text, he appears to suggest that Ohio State should “leak” that the Crimson Tide were trying to poach his coaches.Meyer, in the text, appears to imply that it would help Ohio State’s recruiting if recruits knew that Alabama was trying to his away his coaches. This is likely par for the course in college football recruiting. But it’s still fascinating to actually read. He eventually resigned after the 2018 season.Smith, meanwhile, was fired before the 2018 season.
